Our child care program is designed to:

  • Encourage children to interact and communicate in a positive way.
  • Support children’s ability to self-regulate.
  • Foster children’s exploration, play and inquiry.
  • Provide child-initiated and adult-supported experiences.
  • Offer children opportunities to create authentic lasting relationships with others in the program.

Our Curriculum

Develop Communication

Through play, children acquire a variety of new skills, and learn to make choices as well as recognize and respect the needs and feelings of others.  Play stimulates the learning process.  Each child develops at his/her own pace in a stimulating and enjoyable environment.

Learn & Play

We believe children learn when they are engaged, active, interested, challenged and having fun.  Learning experiences are both planned and spontaneous based upon the children’s interests and developmental needs.  Programs support learning and development in all areas: physical, social/emotional, cognitive, and language / literacy development.

Research confirms that play is the primary way that all children learn.

Children learn best through play and this is why our Child Care Program offers a play-based learning environment.  Our curriculum provides a variety of opportunities for children to learn about and explore their environment.  Daily activities include indoor and outdoor play, individual and small group activities, teacher-directed and child-initiated learning, as well as dynamic and quiet periods. Our Curriculum includes key learning-areas designed to enable children to learn about themselves, as well as others and the world around them.

Develop Talents

Using a wide variety of music, children are encouraged to listen, sing, play musical instruments and move in new ways to help develop their body.

The children will develop their creative abilities by:

  • Participating in class sing-a-longs.
  • Exploring vocal abilities during vocal play in a creative manner.
  • Listening with great focus and attention and recognizing musical elements in songs.
  • Moving and dancing expressively and creatively in response to auditory cues.
  • Playing instruments in response to certain musical elements.
  • Playing instruments with creativity.

Outdoor Play

La Citadelle recognizes the value of learning experiences, developmental opportunities and health benefits that participating in outdoor play year-round can provide.  Outdoor play-time is used as an opportunity to expand on children’s learning and encourage physical activity to support optimal health in the future.

At times, depending on the weather, children’s outdoor time may be extended or shortened to ensure that children are active, engaged and comfortable.  Staff monitors the children’s comfort and activity levels in the varying weather conditions to determine the length of time children will remain outdoors.

Health, Nutrition and Safety

Safety

La Citadelle’s educators and staff ensure that the children can be seen at all times by a member of the personnel in all sections of the playground.Furthermore, educators place themselves in strategic spots to prevent and avoid accidents.  For safety reasons, children are prohibited from being left alone or running in La Citadelle Child Care. All accidents and injuries are documented by the educator present and the report is signed by the educator and Director, and parents.

There is a high level Serious Occurrence Notification Form in a visible location for at least ten days when a serious occurrence has happened. This Form is updated as La Citadelle’s Child Care takes additional actions or investigations are completed and remains posted for 10 days from the date of the update.

This reporting method is one of many tools that allow us to communicate with parents about serious occurrences that have occurred at La Citadelle’s Child Care while providing us with an effective means of monitoring the appropriateness and quality of service delivery.

Nutrition

All students in La Citadelle’s Child Care Program will be served snacks and lunch ordered and prepaid by parents from the school’s selected caterer.  Parents are not allowed to send any type of food or snacks to school.

A good diet is an important part of our program.  The meals and snacks offered to the children conform to the Ministry’s guidelines, as well as Canada’s Food Guide. Menus are posted for periods covering four weeks.  Any food allergies and dietary restrictions will be respected as per parent request.  Dietary restrictions and food allergies will be posted in the classroom.

Children are encouraged to taste all dishes served, but are never forced to eat them.  An additional portion will be available for those who are still hungry.  Food is never used as a way of controlling or punishing.  The personnel have lunch with the children to help role-model and to create a familial atmosphere.

Due to severe allergies, it is forbidden to bring nuts and nut products to school.  As well, candy, bubble gum and other sweets are not allowed at school. Finally, breakfast must be eaten at home before coming to La Citadelle’s Child Care.
